On July 14 2016, the Promenade des Anglais was struck by a terrible attack. Four months after this tragedy, the Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes took place to commemorate those who were lost during this attack.

David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes, donned his trainers once again to complete the marathon in 3h 11min 22sec, not his fastest time but certainly an achievement. "For the French Riviera, the day of commemoration of the attacks of Paris, it was unthinkable that the Nice-Cannes marathon will not take place."

A hotly contested race, at 38km the Kenyans Elisha Kipchirchir and Felix Kimutai escaped, leaving the field of elite runners behind. It was finally Elisha Kipchirchir who took the win in 2h 10min 45sec. For the women, it was the Ethiopian Tilahun Biruk who took first place with a time of 2h 37min 56sec.

For the first time since its creation in 2008 the marathon did not pass along the Promenade des Anglais, but it is hoped that this wonderful race will return to its iconic setting on the Promenade next year for the 2017 edition.
