Uma Thurman steals the show at the opening ceremony

The much anticipated first red carpet event of the 70th Cannes Film Festival took place last night, the opening ceremony and screening of Ismael's Ghosts (Les Fantomes d'Ismael) at the Palais des Festival in Cannes.

As expected, celebrities turned up in their finest attire and took to the red carpet to show off their suits, gowns and jewels. Uma Thurman, president of the jury for Cannes' Un Certain Regard award, stole the show right at the end as she was the last to arrive for the screening, looking elegant in a blush coloured Atelier Versace gown. The American actress is no stranger to Cannes but this year will stamp her authority as she presides over the second competition of the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival.

Another show stopper was actress Julianne Moore in a stunning Givenchy Couture gown in deep red. The figure hugging dress mirrored the red carpet beautifully and was all feathers and jewels, giving the redhead a Spanish flamenco feel for the night. The 56-year-old actress will be back on the red carpet later in the week for the premiere of Wonderstruck by Todd Haynes where she stars alongside Michelle Williams.

Model and actress Lily Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, looked every bit Cannes royalty as she glided down the red carpet in her Grecian style Channel dress straight from the 2018 runway. Her natural beauty shone through in this simple gown.

As always there were several fashion 'faux pas' on the night, and more than a few confusing outfits. Spanish actress Victoria Abril wore a kimono-style dress in African printed fabric with a rather elaborate hair piece that was hard to place. She certainly made a statement.

You can re-watch the opening ceremony on the official website. With more red carpet events to come, we will wait and see who reigns supreme at this year's Cannes Film Festival as the Queen of Fashion.
