TEPOS (Territoires à énergie positive pour la croissance verte) was launched last September by the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, Segolene Royal.

Translated as 'The energy transition towards green growth', the competition organised by the French government was aimed at highlighting and rewarding those communes, towns and cities who have environmental projects either in the planning stages or in current use. The 528 nominations were investigated, interviewed and examined and eventually narrowed down to 212 winners who will now receive funding towards future projects.

Cannes is amongst those winners with projects that include reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable waste management, renewable energy development and conservation and environmental education. As well as enhancing the image of the cities and showing their commitment to sustainable development, the award comes with between €500,000 to € 2 million depending on the quality of projects. In total the government will be committing an enormous € 1.5 billion towards the project.

Only two cities in the Alpes-Maritime region have been selected, Nice and Cannes. They can now officially call themselves two of the 'greenest' cities in France!
