Cannes turns green for St Patrick's Day 2018
The city's monuments lit up green for the Irish festival
The city of Cannes has a special relationship with Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The legend goes that he trained as a priest on the island of Saint-Honorat, in the Bay of Cannes, before heading on his quest to evangelise Ireland. Even though the story cannot be confirmed, the monasteries on the Lérins island were important centres of learning since the 5th century.
Cannes proudly celebrates this link every 17th of March, Saint Patrick's Day, by illuminating the town's most iconic monuments in green. These include the Hotel de Ville, the Castre Museum, the Palais des Festivals, the Forville Market, the promenade of La Croisette and several of its legendary luxury hotels, including the Martinez, Le Grand Hotel and the JW Marriott.
The festivities this year will also include live music in front of the town hall by the traditional Irish folk band Dawn Chorus, who will be accompanied by acrobatic Irish dancers. Most of the local bars will also be offering special deals on Guinness and general Saint Patrick's shenanigans... Slainte!
