High Pollution Results in Diesel Ban Plan in Cannes

Towns across Provence & the Cote d'Azur react to recent pollution problems

In total, 52 towns across the area are introducing a ban of certain vehicles during times of high pollution. Implementing the ban will begin in 2016.

Identification of vehicles will commence next year when owners of diesel vehicles over 15 years of age will be obliged to display a 'traffic light' style sticker which will identify whether or not they are allowed to drive during periods of high pollution.

A red sticker means that the vehicle will be totally banned from the roads during these times, an orange sticker will allow some travel on certain roads but no access to the towns affected. Green stickers will be restricted to electric and hybrid cars who will be free to travel without restriction.

Last month Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo announced plans to ban diesel vehicles from the French capital by 2020. Two thirds of cars on the roads of France are run on diesel as this has always been the favoured fuel, however new measures being drawn up by the government will see diesel prices rising and a league table of cars classified by their emission levels. As an incentive to car owners to buy better performing cars they could benefit from free parking and possibly the use of bus lanes!

So if you are thinking of changing your car this year then it might be worth considering switching to an electric or hybrid car so that you too can benefit from these perks and be free to travel even during pollution peak times.

The towns affected across the region are as follows: Antibes, Aspremont, Auribeau-sur-Siagne, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Berre-les-Alpes, Biot, Cabris, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Cannes, Cantaron, Carros, Castagniers, Châteauneuf-Grasse, Châteauneuf-Villevieille, Colomars, Contes, Drap, Falicon, Gattières, Gourdon, Grasse, La Colle-sur-Loup, La Gaude, La Roquette-sur-Siagne, La Trinité, Le Bar-sur-Loup, Le Cannet, Le Rouret, Le Tignet, Mandelieu-la-Napoule, Mouans-Sartoux, Mougins, Nice, Opio, Pégomas, Peymeinade, Roquefort-Les-Pins, Saint-André-de-la-Roche, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Saint-Jeannet, Saint-Laurent-du-Var, Saint-Paul, Spéracèdes, Théoule-sur-Mer, Tourrette-Levens, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, Valbonne, Vallauris, Vence, Villefranche-sur-Mer and Villeneuve-Loubet.
