She joins fellow directors Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood and Bernardo Bertolucci as Varda is recognised for the global impact of her work.

Born in May 1928, Agnes Varda has stood out in her field since her first film, La Pointe Courte in 1954. Her films, along with her photography and art installations have always focused on documentary realism, feminist issues, and social commentary.

"Her second film, Cleo From 5 To 7, was a documentary style look at a singer awaiting results of a biopsy, which foreshadowed Varda’s fascination with human mortality. Her films also tended to focus on women and her subsequent Vagabond examined the investigation of the death of a female drifter."

Agnes Varda will be awarded the honorary Palme d'Or at this years Cannes Film Festival closing ceremony.
