George Miller named jury president for 69th Cannes Film Festival

Director of blockbuster 'Mad Max: Fury Road' takes control of the red carpet

This will be the fourth year in a row that the jury has been led by an English language director. The Australian, Miller, follows in the footsteps of Joel and Ethan Coen last year in 2015, Jane Campion in 2014, and Steven Spielberg in 2013.

Known for the 'Mad Max' series of action films which began back in 1979 with the original Mad Max that launched Mel Gibson's film career. His latest Mad Max offering was released in 2015 was a huge success taking more than $375 million in worldwide box office. The film is presently nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including best director and best picture for Miller. He previously won an Oscar for best animated feature for “Happy Feet” (2006), and received nominations “Babe” (1995) and “Lorenzo’s Oil” (1992).

George Miller will be the first Australian president of the jury. At the age of 70, Miller is no newcomer to the red carpet of Cannes, having served on the jury back in 1988, under president Ettore Scola and in 1999 under David Cronenberg.

His fellow jurors are yet to be announced.
