Cannes Film festival 2018 - A Space Odyssey
This year's edition will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Kubrick's masterpiece
To commemorate the half-century of Stanley Kubrick's iconic science fiction epic, the Cannes Film Festival will host the world premiere of an unrestored 70mm print of the film, which will be introduced by groundbreaking director Christopher Nolan. Members of the Kubrick family will attend the screening.
Nolan, the filmmaker behind modern classics such as 'Inception', 'Interstellar' or 'The Dark Knight', will also participate in a masterclass on Sunday, May 13th, during which, according to the festival's organisers, "he will discuss his award-winning filmography and also share his passion for the singular work of Stanley Kubrick".
This year's Cannes Film Festival has been the subject of many significant changes. Not only will it start and end a day earlier but there will also be no press screenings before the official world premieres. Usually, the press got to see the films on the morning before the red carpet events but this year they will both happen at the same time.
Another surprising rule that will be enforced in 2018 is the banning of red carpet selfies which, according to president Pierre Lescure, slowed things down. Netflix Original movies will also be excluded from the competition even though two of them, 'Okja' and 'The Meyerowitz Stories', took part in last year's festival.
