New Perfume Brand Full of Local Treats
Grasse perfumer creates her own line of niche fragrances
Grasse is well known for it's history in the perfume trade, and the history of perfume making in the area is fascinating.
From the Middle Ages the town was known for its tanneries, glove-making in particular. Then, in the 16th century, scented gloves became highly fashionable in a smelly world and Grasse was eager to follow the trend. Blessed with a surrounding countryside full of flowers, the town and its tanneries quickly became the foremost producer of these fragrant gloves. While the fashion of scented gloves faded away, the attraction to fragrance remained.
The tanneries then became perfume houses, which still exist today.
Céline Ripert, who has been working at one of these perfume houses for the last twenty years, creating and perfecting fragrances, has now created her own brand, NANA-M. Drawing on local expertise, growing natural materials and the unique terroir, Céline has created a range of 8 niche perfumes, each with a distinctive olfactory signature.
In addition to these scented creations Céline has an unusual, customised bottle has been specially designed for her creations. Hand-blown by an artisan glass blower, these bottles are all unique works created in Biot, a village reputed for its glassware.
Bringing together these two local and traditional trades has given the new brand a strong identity and a unique selling point for this new local venture.
