What's nearby?

About the surrounding area

Once the most important port in the Mediterranean under Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, the town of Frejus is today a pretty town of pastel coloured buildings and historic monuments, with extensive Roman ruins and a marina. The town's centre, framed around a lovely cathedral square full of cafes, is 2kms from the beach, which runs along into the popular seaside resort of neighbouring Saint Raphael. The main appeal of the town is the ruins of the ancient Roman aqueduct, as well as a 10,000 seat amphitheatre and a theatre which both host atmospheric concerts and theatre performances during the summer months.

Towns nearby

The ancient Roman port town of Frejus borders the resort town of Saint Raphael on that gorgeous red rock stretch of coast between Cannes and Saint Tropez. Frejus sits on the major trainline that runs all along the Riviera, and is serviced by international airports at Nice, Toulon-Hyeres and Marseilles. You can also hop on the express bus to Frejus (No 20) from Nice, Cannes or Aix-en-Provence.

Restaurants nearby

For Michelin starred food you'll have to head to nearby Saint Raphael or Sainte-Maxime, but that's not to say there aren't some very good restaurants in Frejus! This town has plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose between. L'Amandier is your best bet for gourmet food, Le Mérou Ardent does good seafood, and La Bastide du Clos des Roses is a lovely restaurant set in villa gardens just outside Frejus.

Sights nearby

The baptistery of Frejus Cathedral was built in the 5th century, making it the oldest in the Provence region and one of the oldest in France. In town, you'll also find the Cocteau Chapel, conceived by Jean Cocteau In 1961, while the Archaeology Museum is a good starting point to discover the Roman heritage in the area. In the south east of the old city is the 3rd century Porte d’Orée, the only remaining arcade of monumental Roman thermal baths, while if you head north you'll find the ruins of a Théâtre Romain and the old amphitheatre. North east, towards La Tour de Mare, you'll pass a section of a 40 km long aqueduct, which once carried water to Roman Fréjus.

Things to Do nearby

The park of the ancient Roman aqueduct is a wonderful place for walking, picnicking and bike riding. There is also a safari park near the city (Parc Zoologique de Frejus), and for family entertainment you can also visit the water park Aqualand Frejus, the biggest waterpark along the Riviera. It's worth taking a 7km hike up to the ruins of the Malpasset dam, which broke in the floods of 1959, killing more than 400 people in Frejus. For longer hikes, both the Esterel Mountains and the Maures range have wonderful hikes (including the GR51), but they are not easily accessed from Frejus town by foot as the area is very built up.

The closest golf course to Frejus is the Golf and Tennis Club Valescure just outside Saint Raphael, with an 18 hole, par 68 course. Nightlife nearby

Frejus isn't known for its nightlife, but there is a nice buzz and some live music in local bars on summer nights- as well as the concerts at the Roman amphitheatre and theatre of course! The nightclub "La Playa" at Frejus-Plage is the spot to go for dancing by the beach- but if you want a big night out then the clubs of Saint Tropez or Cannes are definitely your best bet.
